  • What is the Permanente Cement Plant and area?

    The Permanente cement plant and its surrounding area covers 123 acres within the larger Permanente site. It has operated in the hills of Santa Clara County for most of the last century, producing the cement that built much of the infrastructure we have come to rely on. Heidelberg Materials, in coordination with Santa Clara County, decided to permanently end cement kiln operations at the Permanente property and will now demolish the cement plant as promised.

  • What is currently happening at the Permanente Cement Plant?

    Heidelberg Materials made the decision to end cement kiln operations at the site in 2022, and formalized this decision to permanently cease cement plant operations, and make future plans to demolish the cement plant, in coordination with Santa Clara County in 2023. Currently, Heidelberg is preparing to begin the application process to demolish the cement plant. This application process will include all of the steps required by the agencies and applicable federal, state and local laws, including: permitting, environmental review, remediation and consolidation of utilities.

  • Who owns the site?

    The site’s current owner is Hanson Permanente Cement Inc., a subsidiary of Heidelberg Materials North America.

  • What will happen to the site in the future?

    The cement plant will be demolished. When that is complete, Heidelberg Materials will lead a collaborative, open process that will engage residents and community leaders in developing site plans that meet everyone’s needs.
